Scawby Gala Weekend 2016
The weather was very warm for Scawby's 4th Gala Weekend even though the week leading up to it had been cold and wet. We had 35 scarecrows, the theme was America and hundreds of trail maps were sold; the winner of the scarecrow quiz was Hannah Piercy. The treasure hunt gets more popular each year and on Friday afternoon right through to Saturday night lots of groups of people were seen around the village searching for clues. Thanks to Jane Botham and Jan Tierney for organising it for us this year. The winner was Sophie Ellis and the Greenies and the Eagles were runners up.
The Friday night dance had to be cancelled earlier in the week as not enough tickets were sold, this was a disappointment for the team and also for the people who had bought tickets and were looking forward to it.
We hosted a lovely vintage afternoon tea on Saturday and Natalie entertained us by playing the piano and singing songs from the musicals and popular songs from the 40s and 60s. At the end of the afternoon she received a very well deserved round of applause and she even helped us to wash up!
The party in the car park at the Sutton Arms started at 2pm this year and the entertainment went on until late. It was such a warm evening, the music was fantastic and the barbeque was very popular with adults and children.
On Sunday morning around 30 Fun Runners set off from Scawby Playing Field at 10.30am and the 2 mile run finished at the Sutton Arms. The Gala opened at 12noon and there was plenty of food and drink to start the afternoon off. It was a very hot day and people sat on hay bales to watch the Karate Display by Brigg Wado Ryu Karate Club. The dog show was more popular than ever with over 80 entries, there was also a display by Scunthorpe Dog Agility and Obedience Training Club. At around 2.10pm everything stopped as we looked up to see an amazing Spitfire Flypast. There were lots of events going on all afternoon for all ages; circus skills, rodeo bull, pillow bash and bouncy castle. The photo booth proved very popular with a queue outside most of the afternoon. We had music, games and stalls, a birds of prey display and of course the very popular classic vehicles. Cars, bikes, scooters and tractors and at 3.30pm they did a parade around the field with a commentary by Peter Papworth.
Presentations were made at the end of the afternoon and the winners of the best scarecrows were:
1st - Alan & Margaret Brown for "AMERICAN ASTRONAUT"
2nd - Janine Parrish & John Heeney for "THERE'S SOMETHING STRANGE IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
3rd - Scawby Sunbeams for "ALL SHOOK UP"
The Fun Run winners were: Martin Hickey, adult winner for the 2nd year and the junior winner was Matthew Oades.
Scawby Events Team want to thank everyone who helped with the weekend, we had a fantastic amount of delicious homemade cakes donated and lots of people gave their time to help, all of this is very much appreciated. Thanks to everyone who made a Scarecrow as these are so popular with everyone, they get people walking around the village and they put a smile on faces of all ages.
Lastly we would like to thank everyone who just came along and enjoyed themselves we could not do it without you.
