Scawby Gala Weekend 2014

The second GALA WEEKEND started at 4pm with a queue at the post office to buy maps for the treasure hunt and the scarecrow trail. The sun was shining and the village was buzzing with families looking for treasure hunt clues and searching for the 38 scarecrow displays. The hog roast and ceilidh was due to start at 7.30pm and some people had to resort to bikes and cars to finish the scarecrow trail as heavy rain had been forecast for Saturday.

The tickets for Friday night’s hog roast and ceilidh had all sold out, the food was delicious and there was plenty left for second helpings. The great music from Major Kelly’s Ceilidh Band entertained us and there was always plenty of people on the dance floor, typically getting the steps completely wrong. There was a lot of laughter, some from the people watching but also from the dancers trying to promenade or strip the willow.

Saturday. Coffee and homemade cakes at the village hall is always a popular event, we have some excellent bakers in Scawby and we had a lot of willing volunteers to wait on tables and wash up. There was a small art display and sale of work plus a craft stall. The entries for the children’s competition to draw a scarecrow were displayed, The winning entries were: 1st Lucy Palmer, 2nd Hope Hammond and joint 3rd Olivia Wells and Emily Butler. Well done to them and thank you to all the children who entered the competition.

It started raining at 9am, fortunately, we had already made the decision to have the garden party in the village hall, this was disappointing  as it should have been in one of the lovely gardens at Scawby Hall. However, Barnetby Silver Band entertained us superbly, the village hall was packed out and some people still brought a picnic. We had delicious strawberries and cream at the interval and everyone had a wonderful afternoon.

By 5pm the rain had stopped and the sun was shining again, it was a lovely warm evening which was fortunate as we were all heading to the Sutton Arms for a party in the car park with a barbeque and music. We sat on straw bales eating delicious homemade burgers and listening to some fantastic music from Jay Tyrer and then from the Hicksville Bombers.

On Gala Sunday the weather was warm, dry and sunny. 75 Fun Runners set off from the playing field at 10.30am, this was nearly twice as many as last year the finishing line this year was the Sutton Arms. Ryan Johnson was the winner. The female winner was Sophie Bell.

Jan and Jon Tierney won the treasure hunt and received a prize and a trophy and trophies were presented to both Ryan Johnson and Sophie Bell for the fun run. Prizes were presented to Lucy, Hope, Olivia and Emily for the scarecrow drawing competition. The prize and shield for the best scarecrow was awarded to the Green family for “Only Fools and horses”. Second was Sandra Andrew for “Bard from the Pub”, and joint third were Ian Dexter for  “Gone Fishing” and Scawby Sunbeams for “Noddy”. Thanks must go to The Mayor of North Lincolnshire Cllr Trevor Foster who had the unenviable task of judging this competition, the standard was extremely high. Thanks also to all the people who made a scarecrow as they are so popular and really enhanced the village over the Gala Weekend

Just before the end of the presentations there was a spectacular Spitfire flypast.

The gates opened for visitors at 12 noon and we were all ready with a display of classic cars, motor bikes and tractors. There was plenty to eat; burgers and hot dogs, tea and cakes, doughnuts, candyfloss and

ice cream plus a beer tent. We had music, snakes, a bearded dragon, a bouncy castle and face painting. Majorettes, Karate and a fun dog show were all very popular. During the birds of prey display a falcon decided to go AWOL but returned during the afternoon to a round of applause.

Cross bar challenge, welly wanging and target golf were all popular, there were lots of stalls and also entertainers for the children. All the classic vehicles paraded around the field at 3.30pm and then the presentations took place.
