Thank you to everyone who has taken part in this year’s Platinum Jubilee Gala Weekend.
Over 80 children attended the afternoon tea and craft session organised by Liz and Claire. All their hard work was very much appreciated by happy children walking home wearing their beautifully crafted crowns.
The Platinum Jubilee Beacon was lit at 9.45pm on Thursday, in line with other beacons across the UK and the commonwealth. It was a spectacular occasion and well supported by the village.
This is something that most people will remember for a very long time.
It’s a few years since we had a Fun Run but we thought lots of people would enjoy it again so we invited everyone to wear red white and blue and ‘Run a Royal Jubilee Mile’ around the playing field. Around 50 people of all ages turned up and they all went home with a Fun Run Medal.
The Treasure Hunt which ran from Friday morning to Saturday evening was won by Val Hallam with a score of 37. Well done to Val and her team. Thank you to Scawby Co-op for selling the maps for us.
Glam45 brought a party to Scawby on Friday night & had us all up on the dance floor all night. From Bowie to Bolan, Abba to Alvin Stardust… they are an awesome tribute band. Thanks to Scawby Post Office for selling the tickets for us.
A Royal Jubilee Cream Tea was a sell-out on Saturday afternoon and the village hall looked very royal dressed with flags and bunting. George Holmes entertained us with a wide variety of familiar songs. Scawby Post Office sold the tickets for this event too and their help is very much appreciated.
The weather forecast for Sunday was for heavy rain and the Spitfire Flypast was cancelled much to our disappointment. The forecast was, as usual, changing all the time and finally a decision was made to go ahead with the gala. The team and helpers assembled at Scawby Playing Field at 8.30am, it was raining hard and there was nothing we could do but watch and wait. Cancellations started coming in from stalls including food stalls. The weather gradually brightened up, we put up the gazebos and hoped for the best…
Before we opened at 12 noon crowds of people were walking up the lane… as usual Scawby folk did us proud!
We had around 700 people through the gates which is quite a few less than normal but we were pleased with the number as the afternoon was very cold and we had a few slight showers.
Only three classic cars turned up but we had some local stalls and a face painter. Lab Rascals, Lego workshop, bouncy castles, circus skills and Captivating Creatures. We had entertainment from Dream a little Dream children’s entertainer. Tsunami All Stars gave us an amazing gym display and Tatterfoals Morris Dancers from Brigg performed their traditional dances for us in a very professional manner. We also had a falconry display which kept the children enthralled. Kris Small provided the music and did the announcements as he has at every Scawby Gala since we started in 2013.
The Dog Show is always popular, links to the results and photos are on this page. Thanks to Sue for organising it.
The prize for the best Jubilee Decorated House was awarded to the Coulson family of Gainsborough Lane, well done to them, their house looks very royal indeed. Thank you to Ryan and Neil for donating the prize & also for encouraging us all to decorate our homes and gardens. Yarn-bombing has now become very popular, the WI made a fabulous job of decorating every one of our five bus shelters and Carole & Lyndsey decorated the churchyard. Undercover Yarners decorated the seats, the village green, the Co-op and the village hall and topped the post box with a crown. We had a throne and a red carpet on the village green and HM Queen (cardboard cut-out) moved around the village, mostly keeping out of the rain. She was at the Fun Run and the children’s craft session and also at the Gala where she patiently posed for selfies & rumour has it that she was also seen ‘crowd-surfing’ at the Glam 45 party!!
We still have some of our limited edition Scawby Gala Mugs for sale at just £5 each. please contact us if you would like to purchase one or more.
A big thank you to everyone who helped us during this special Platinum Jubilee Gala. The whole weekend has been successful because everything we have organised has been so well supported by you and we could not do it without you.
Thank you Scawby
